In 3 days, I will embark on a journey of a lifetime, Wiaga, Ghana. A few years ago, my family was blessed in meeting Thomas Awiapo through Catholic Relief Services. Thomas is a kind hearted man who travels the U.S. twice a year talking about his mission and his life. He also runs a school, St. Thomas Aquinas Preparatory, in his village. My family took an immediate bonding and love to this gentle soul. He calls us his family here in, and always loved visiting with our dear Aunt Carolyn, "Auntie," as he called her. Over the years, my family has funded the building of this school and the villagers built it brick by brick.
Two years ago, the school was completed and only had 17 students. Today, it has grown to over 100 students and is continuing to grow. St. Thomas Aquinas has installed bathrooms for the children, Also, they've added a nursery, and in the process of adding a Junior High School, as well as perfecting their roads and installing a soccer field and area for volleyball. Many of these students have to walk anywhere between 1-5 miles to get to school each day. Now, they transportation too.
Thomas and his villagers have been forever grateful for this gift of sponsorship. I am honored that I get to represent my family in this journey to meet the school and have it officially dedicated. I plan on bringing back memories (and photos) of this life-changing experience, and would love to have my school, St. Paul the Apostle, partner with them in the future.
This is my first blog entry, I will enter more provided I get a good enough wifi signal. 😃
Here are pictures of the school sent by Thomas.
